Lake Nakuru National Park is an important sanctuary for both Kenya’s indigenous black rhino and the white rhino, introduced to the country from South Africa. Nineteen of the fifty-six
rhino in the park are white rhino translocated from Solio Ranch in 1992.
Ten additional white rhino brought in from South Africa in 1994 diversified the gene pool. The two calves born last year were the product of the sanctuary’s successful breeding programme. Once stocks have built up, KWS plans to translocate some rhino to other sanctuaries and parks in Kenya.
