ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

This report was produced after a chain of participatory village barazas and interviews with many groups and numerous individuals. Needless to say, it involved the cooperation of many people. Their personal and joint efforts contributed to the sucessful compilation of the report.

We have in mind all the people we met in Laikipia, Nyeri, Meru, Samburu, Narok, Kajiado, Taita, Kwale, Mombasa, Nairobi and Machakos who gave their valuable time and thoughts to find answers to Kenya's wildlife-human dilemma. Among them were wildlife associations and fora, group ranchers, local and foreign NGO's in Nairobi, Mombasa hotel and tour operators, KATO (Nairobi), Mombasa Beach Operators, Government of KEnya Ministries, county councils, Members of Parliarment provincial and district commisioners.

Special thanks go to the staff of KWS, especially CWS area cordinators and the Public Relations Officer, who jointly organised the successful field intinerary and intyerviews. Many thanks go to the community wildlife officers for providing much required co-ordination at district and local levels, and to KWS pilot Captain Elijah Anyonyi. At KWS headquarters we received assistance from Mr Robinson Kagonia of the Computer Section, Miss Millicent Okumu, and Mrs Rhoda Makau.

Finally, we are grateful to the press, including local newspapers, the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, Kenya Television Network, and the BBC, for bringing our mission to the public. We also thank the East African Wildlife Society for helping with the production of this report.

Last but not least, out thanks go to Dr. David Western, Director KWS, for his guidance and vision of the complex topic of wildlife-human conflict.
